Optimal design of a long and slender compressive strut

J Byström

Abstract

This article deals with the optimal design of long and slender compressivestruts. The main objective is to minimize the mass of the struts undercertain non-failure constraints and thus find the optimal material. We showthat the main failure mode of the struts is Euler buckling. The results clearlyshow that the struts should be constructed from unidirectional carbon fibercomposites. A Monte-Carlo model for random microstructurehomogenization of unidirectional composites is developed. We finish byperforming a numerical computation of the effective properties of thechosen carbon fiber/epoxy composite using COMSOL MULTIPHYSICSsoftware.
