Stress Concentrations Optimisation Process for Engineering Structures

Abstract

Prediction of fatigue life is a critical issue in the design of aerostructures.Stress concentrations are crucial in this connection. The paper proposes adesign optimisation methodology aimed at achieving a longer and saferworking record for a structure over its lifecycle, based on the redistributionof material to balance the effect of stress concentrations. The idea ofdesign optimisation in situations where primary failure is driven by stressconcentrations is worthwhile and has the potential to offer designengineers a better view in the design structures subjected to fatigueloading and an opportunity for better utilisation of material with itsassociated economic benefits.Prediction of fatigue life is a critical issue in the design of aerostructures.Stress concentrations are crucial in this connection.
